Dietary Policy

We understand that you may have questions about whether our workshops are suitable for you or your child if there are dietary requirements, food allergies or intolerances.

We are obsessed with food at Scran and we will always aim to be as inclusive as possible, we will always do our best to accommodate dietary needs where it is safe and practical to do so. However, due to the nature of our workshops and the ingredients used, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to cater for all dietary requirements or allergies.

Our workshops follow a set menu, which has been carefully planned to provide the best cooking experience. Some workshops may offer a vegetarian option, although this is not always possible. Any available dietary options will be clearly stated on our website.

If you or your child or yourself has any allergies, intolerances or other dietary requirements, please contact us at info@scranfoodnw.co.uk before booking. We will discuss your requirements with you and advise whether we can safely accommodate them. We reserve the right to decline a booking if we cannot do so safely.

Our workshops take place in a family home kitchen, which is also used for preparing our own household meals outside of workshop times. As a result, common allergens including, but not limited to: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat (gluten), soy, sesame, fish and shellfish, may be present in the kitchen. Although we take reasonable care with food preparation and hygiene, we cannot guarantee that any food prepared during our workshops is free from allergens or that cross-contamination will not occur.

Our workshops may use “not-so-common” and ingredients native to that country, we welcome guests to come with an open mind and try everything that is on offer. As your Mum always said ‘you never know until you try!’

Gift voucher policy

Vouchers are valid from 6 months of purchase.

Vouchers are non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash.

Photography

We often will take photographs during workshops and events for our website and promotional material on our website, social media and other adverts. If you, or anyone else included in the booking do not wish to be included please let us know.

Age groups

Classes are suitable for children aged 4-112 years old, the cost of the workshop covers the ingredients for the child only.  A parent/guardian must stay with the children aged up to 7 years for support, we are only available to accommodate one adult to one child due to the space in our kitchen. The workshops are suitable for children aged 4 upwards but they must have started school.

For children over the age of 7, parents are not required to stay but please do pick them up again!

At the time of booking, participants are asked to provide details of any allergies or specific learning requirements. While it may not be possible to accommodate every need, workshops are adapted wherever possible to provide a safe, inclusive, and accessible experience for all.

Kitchen Safety

At Scran, we believe children can safely learn essential cooking skills in a supervised environment. This policy sets out how knives are used during our children’s cooking workshops to minimise the risk of injury while building confidence and independence.

We use Kuhn Rikon Kids Knives, which are specifically designed for children. These knives have a serrated stainless-steel blade with a rounded tip to help children cut food safely while reducing the risk of serious injury compared with traditional kitchen knives.

Children are not permitted to bring their own knives to workshops.

  • All cutting activities are supervised by an adult instructor at all times.
  • Demonstrations are given before any cutting activity begins.
  • Children are shown the correct grip, cutting technique and safe handling procedures.
  • Additional support is provided to younger children or those who require assistance.
  • Any child who is not following safety instructions may be asked to stop using the equipment.

Children are instructed to:

  • Wash and dry their hands before handling knives or other sharp kitchen tools.
  • Always use a stable chopping board on a non-slip surface.
  • Keep fingers tucked safely away from the blade using the “claw grip” where appropriate.
  • Cut away from their body whenever possible.
  • Walk only when not carrying a knife. If a knife needs to be moved, it should be carried with the blade pointing downwards by their side.
  • Never wave, point or play with a knife.
  • Place the knife flat on the work surface when not in use.
  • Pass knives by placing them on the work surface rather than handing them directly to another person.

Children may also use peelers and graters as part of workshop activities where appropriate for their age and ability.

  • Cut-resistant gloves are provided and must be worn when using graters and peelers.
  • Children receive a demonstration on the correct and safe use of each tool before use.
  • Activities involving graters and peelers are closely supervised at all times.
  • Equipment is only used for its intended purpose and is removed from the workstation once the activity is complete.

Suitable ingredients are selected to match the children’s age and ability. Hard or difficult-to-cut foods may be prepared by the instructor before the workshop where necessary.

Knives, graters and peelers are stored securely when not in use and are only distributed when required for the activity. At the end of each session, all equipment is collected, cleaned and stored safely out of children’s reach.

In the event of a minor cut, the activity will stop immediately while appropriate first aid is administered. Any cuts will be covered with a suitable waterproof dressing before the child returns to the activity, if appropriate. Parents or carers will be informed of any injury that occurs during the workshop.
